Carbontex sheet is the ultimate drag washer material for fishing reels. Tough, inexpensive, easy to cut and fit, almost impervious to heat, it’s a quantum leap over the fibre washers fitted to so many factory fishing reels.

Carbontex sheet has a light cross hatched surface, which holds drag grease. Compare these two washers. The brown one is the stock factory washer from a Daiwa 40H:

Here’s how the new drag washer looks, when fitted:

To get the right size washer for the drags in your reel,  firstly remove the washers from your reel.

To make the internal hole of the washer, a power drill is okay. Here’s a short video on how to do that:

But if doing more than one reel a cheap punch set (as used for leatherwork) makes everything faster and easier. Now you’re ready to cut the outside edge of your washer. That’s easy:

Apply a good quality drag grease to both sides of the carbontex washer:

That’s a one minute job:

We supply carbontex in both 1mm and 0.5mm thickness. 0.5mm is usually used for baitcasting reels.

The cost is $22.50 Australian for a sheet approximately 195 x 110mm, which just fits inside a DL size business envelope. This cost includes delivery by airmail to anywhere in the world. We send carbontex around the world every day:

The Shimano TR200G had one washer with small locating tags on it, so instead of using the wad cutter we simply held the old washer firmly to the sheet of carbontex and used a pair of sidecutters to cut around it and to leave the tags there. A bit of sanding and filing made it near as damn to perfect.

 

We found with most reels that a very light smear of reel grease on the washers made it really, really smooth. Very pleased with the result. Plus, as mentioned, I reckon it adds about 20% extra drag pressure to the reels, maybe you guys could do a before and after test to prove or disprove this!

 

When the tackle shops sell 3 carbon drag washers to do one reel for $25, and we managed to do 7 reels, that’s pretty damn good value, hey!

  • 2 x Shimano Symetre 4000’s
  • 2 x Shimano Spheros 14000’s
  • 1 x Shimano Baitrunner 6500’s
  • 1 x Shimano Corsair 400 baitcaster
  • 1 x Shimano TR200g o/head

 In follow up to our conversation last week, I am keen to get some more Carbontex material off you as well as the new size being 0.50mm. To date I have found the 1mm sheet the most economical on the Australian market and easy to purchase generally supplied in the same week if ordered at the start of the week. I have been able to get out of 1 sheet up to 9 complete reels and various base washers and still have some left over. Like I said top value for the money. In the 15 years that I have been servicing / repairing reels Carbontex is by far the best drag material available on the market at the moment, far outlasts other materials and can withstand a lot more heat when hooked up to those big fish, I personally wouldn't use anything else.

Looking to upgrade the drags on my Shimano Bulls Eye XT and Shimano Aero Technium MGS XSA after I cooked the felt drag washer on the bulls eye after hooking a shark off Fraser Island.  Pics attached of what is should look like, and what it looks like after the shark peeled off 260 yards of braid.  I saw the bottom of my shallow spool, applied more pressure and then the line parted.  I don’t think I was going to stop that shark with the gear I had but it was certainly clear the factory drag cannot cope with such pressure.

Andrew, I phoned today asking about carbontex sheet thinner than your normal 1mm stock. You said that you had some photos regarding a method to sand the sheet down that you could email me. I would also like to purchase some 0.5mm sheet when you have it in stock. Please send me an email when it arrives and I will buy some. Attached are some photos of a rough punch that I made. Used in the proper way on timber end grain, it appears to cut well.

I have a sheet of the stuff at home and have actually been making a couple this week for Certate Hyper 4000, Certate 3000 and my Saltist 4500H. If you've got a set of punches it's easier but not critical.

I'm not sure ordering a couple at a time makes a difference but I can tell you I've cut 9 3000/4000 sized spin washers for Certates and I've only used about half the sheet so it's well worth the $20 seeing as I paid $35 for the first set of 3 I bought about 8 months ago.

One bit of advice. This stuff is 1mm so 3 of them are thicker than 3 standard washers. All I did was put a piece of 180 grit paper on a flat plank and sanded them thinner, you can go gently cause it sands easily. You can do it by eye but I have a digital vernier to measure down to some precise sizes.

Below is the final version. I used a punch for the centres but scissors and hand sanded the outer edge

I bought a sheet of this mob as well, you will get a few reels out of one sheet and its pretty easy to manufacture them. Just a matter of tracing around the originals and using a sharp blade to cut them, grease them up and your good to go.
